This has been making the rounds. From Jeffrey Goldberg’s Atlantic interview with the President:
‘I sent these comments on Wednesday to Rabbi Steinlauf to see if he disagreed with my belief that Obama, when he talks about Israel, sounds like a rabbi in the progressive Zionist tradition. Steinlauf wrote back: “President Obama shares the same yearning for a secure peace in Israel that I and so many of my rabbinic colleagues have. While he doesn’t speak as a Jew, his progressive values flow directly out of the core messages of Torah, and so he is deeply in touch with the heart and spirit of the Jewish people.’
As posted many years ago:
“I hate competition of victimhood. But I also hate the idea of a big, huge, and empty concept of suffering…”
“And one of the reasons I am so much in favor of [Senator Barack] Obama is that his election might be, will be—because I think he will be elected—a real end to this tide of competition of victimhood, and especially on the specific ground of the two communities, Jews and African Americans, who were so close in the 1960s”
…”The Obama election would reconstitute the grand alliance.”
The grand alliance? The generation of ’68. Global solidarity.
At least Henri-Levy has the courage to point out the rampant anti-Semitism in Europe, where a toxic brew of Muslim, nativist, and anti-Israeli sentiment is making the rounds.
The Kentucky Fried Movie may have gotten there first. You have to be able to laugh sometimes, especially at the swelled chests not of radicals and semi-radicals, but all those square types who awkwardly nurture the tiny radical within in times like these.
‘. . and now, in the season of Radical Chic, the Black Panthers. That huge Panther there, the one Felicia is smiling her tango smile at, is Robert Bay, who just 41 hours ago was arrested in an altercation with the police, supposedly over a .38-caliber revolver that someone had, in a parked car in Queens at Northern Boulevard and 104th Street or some such unbelievable place, and taken to jail on a most unusual charge called “criminal facilitation.” And now he is out on bail and walking into Leonard and Felicia Bernstein’s 13-room penthouse duplex on Park Avenue. Harassment & Hassles, Guns & Pigs, Jail & Bail—they’re real, these Black Panthers. The very idea of them, these real revolutionaries, who actually put their lives on the line, runs through Lenny’s duplex like a rogue hormone.’
The problem with ‘brownstone activism’ may be the material itself:
‘Brownstone is a word used both to refer to a type of building material and structures built or sheathed in it. While it is most closely associated with the Eastern United States, this material was at one point used all over the world in construction, particularly in upper class regions. A distinctive architectural style using brownstone is very familiar to many residents of industrialized nations. Its popularity as a building material waned when builders began to realize that it weathered poorly, and that other materials might be more suitable.’
Soft, crumbly, loosely aggregated, weathers poorly…
Did the 60’s counter-culture and the conservative counter-counter culture both win, in a sense?
